Ethernet cables, using electrical pulses to transmit data, used to be just for the local area network or LAN, but the technology has advanced, with CAT 5e, CAT 6, and CAT 7 cable technology - and now the broadband can be delivered via an ethernet cable.

The other option is glass fibre, which delivers broadband capacity via s light pulses to transmit information.

Ethernet cables require a protective shield, both to prevent electrical interference, and signal leakage.

Fibre cables are more secure, and are also appropriate, as they do not use electrical pulses, in locations with high voltage equipment, or where explosive fumes may be present.

Legacy telephone systems run off a physical PABX (private automatic branch exchange). VOIP or IP Telephony runs off virtual PABXs either hosted on a server, or in the cloud, and the voice is transmitted in a digital format over fibre or ethernet.
